I’ve been giving blood for years trusting obviously this will mean I’ll never need it in return. Bone marrow donation scar Anyway a few years ago I was asked if I’d register as a Bone Marrow Doner, I said yes without a second thought.

Then last week at a dinner party…yes it’s my own fault for going to such things…the conversation of Bone Marrow came up. Cost of bone marrow transplant in india Both a donor and a health care worker then proceeded to unhinge me with tales of pain, long term discomfort and sports seasons ruined.

This is clearly nothing compared to those who can benefit by such a procedure but was is the score?

I rang the Blood and Transplant service and they were a bit glossy over it so in true forum style what do you know?

My brother had a BMT about 15 years ago as part of his treatment for Leaukemia.

Well, reality is that there could be a lot of pain and discomfort, let alone disrupting your training, but how would you feel if you saved someone’s life?

unless I’m mistaken the fitness of the person makes the recovery much quicker so in any way triathletes being fitter will in any case recover much faster than the average population – it’s certainly what my local medical practice thinks about my recovery times and I’m sure many of us are the same – don’t forget we are not average compared to the general population in terms of fitness – so we reap the benefits with much faster healing and recovering times on average

When I’ve looked to register in the past I’ve found I can’t having had sciatica in the past; does anyone happen to know why this precludes me from being a donor?

I’ve not looked into it in any detail beyond “Oh, oh well, that’s a shame” but since there seems to be some knowledge floating around here (and I’m a bit bored) thought I’d ask.

I give blood regularly and am a registered organ donor, but I don’t think I’m on the register for bone marrow donation. not sure why that would stop you ( are you sure its not the wierd sex question that rules you out ?)

Not so fast….it appears that at 45, I’m too old. Bone marrow donation age limit That’s a kick in the teeth!

if it was based on how old you look you would get in no problem.

keep donating that blood anyway – your good for that for a few years yet

That’s a wierd one, for sure… Complications of bone marrow aspiration maybe sciatica can be an indicator of some bone disorders?

I was chucked off the register some years ago, unfortunately at the point that my name came up as a potential match for a patient. Bone marrow in bloodstream I’d had sarcoidosis since signing up so it was a straight no as soon as they found out. Bone marrow donor process I was quite disappointed. Is bone marrow good for you I stopped giving blood as well which I feel equally bad about.
